Workshop to Discuss the Methodology for Developing Mechanisms for the Conservation and Management of the Historic Town of Bethlehem

eu 2012 Within the framework of the Heritage for Development project, Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation (CCHP) and the Municipality of Bethlehem organised a workshop to discuss the methodologies to for developing mechanisms for the conservation and management of the historic town of Bethlehem on 29 August 2012. The workshop was held at Bethlehem Peace Centre.

 

Dr. Victor Batarseh, Mayor of Bethlehem welcomed the attendees and thanked them for their interest in preserving cultural heritage assets in Bethlehem, and thanked CCHP for the efforts spent in preserving this heritage for future generations, and for their cooperation with the municipality in the field. Dr. Batarseh also stressed on the importance of the workshop, and called everybody to participate in the discussion in order to come out with satisfactory results.


In his turn, architect Issam Juha, director of CCHP, pointed out to the importance of Heritage for Development project, especially after the inscription of Bethlehem on the World Heritage List; the event that made every Bethlehemite and every Palestinian proud and the role of CCHP in this accomplishment. Arch. Juha also view the projects that CCHP implemented in Bethlehem, and the development of the vision of the centre from individual projects towards comprehensive project, including the research and studies, and community participation activities which aim to enhance the local community in decision-making. Arch. Juha ended in calling everybody to join this workshop and future workshops in order to come out with the best results, and explained the importance of the project in supporting the unscription of Bethlehem on the World Heritage List.


In addition, the Palestinian vice ambassador to UNESCO, Mr Munir Anastas who was visiting Bethlehem congratulated everybody on the inscription of Bethlehem. Mr. Anastas stressed in this inscription as a Palestinian right, and pointed out to the responsibility of the municipality and CCHP in following up with the requirements of this inscription, including the reporting and preparation of a conservation and management plan. He also assured that this is our responsibility as Palestinians, and that it proves our will in preserving our cultural heritage and keeping it safe for future generations.


The speeches were followed by a general view of the project by arch. Nada Atrash, the Heritage for Developemnt project coordinator. In addition to an overview of the project progress and outputs by architects Anton Stephan and Ghadeer Najjar from CCHP and architect Ziad Al Sayeh from Bethlehem municipality. The presentations also reflected the importance of the project in building the capacities of Bethlehem municipality in the conservation and management of cultural heritage resources in the town. The presentation were followed by a group discussion, Dr. Batarseh, arch. Juha and the team answered questions.


The Workshop was attended by mayor of Bethlehem Dr.Victor Batarseh and the members of the municipal council, Mr. Munir Anastas the vice ambassador of Palestine to UNESCO, Rev. Mitri Al Rahib director of Diyar Group and interested representatives from Bethlehem.
Heritage for Development is funded by European Commission and is implemented by the Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation – CCHP in partnership with Riwaq – Centre for Architectural Conservation, Cultural Technologies “CulTech” in Jordan and RehabiMed Association in Spain.
