Korean Experience:

It was a great opportunity to work with ICCN Secretariat headquarter in Gangneung city for about 5 months, Gangwon province , which is located about 4 hours by bus from Seoul. This period of time was full of incredible experiences and activities. It was a period of fruitful cultural exchange where I presented my culture and discover the Korean one in an international environment working in an office with more than four nationalities.

Generally, this experience has been a chance to know more about Intangible Cultural Heritage ICH as concept and as practice. Korea can be counted among the best country in the field of safeguarding and promoting ICH. In particular, how a country can maintain its identity in a developed way.

Working in ICCN office gave a chance to promote my interpersonal, my communication and my professional skills. Understanding deeply about networking and cooperation in the field of culture was an added value.

The most exciting part was the one I am supposed to give as a representative of Palestinian culture. In this regard I took part in different activities, starting from practicing some Korean folk music songs ending by singing Palestinian songs and giving presentation about Palestine generally in a place where the common known about Palestine is the conflicts. I presented the Palestine of art and culture.

ICCN (Intercity Intangible Cultural Network Cooperation in Korea) was a great opportunity to present the Palestinian culture, to show the Korean student that Palestine is not just about war, there are people praying for peace and living their life regardless off all painful things going on there.  These presentations for students took place several times; the last one was for students from tourism department in Kwandong University.

To make peace possible I believe it is an important step to increase the awareness about the Palestinian tangible and intangible Cultural heritage among different Cultures. Especially, when it is one of the goals of the 2003 Convention UNESCO.

Participating in Arirang (Korean Folk Love Song) and performing it in different event and festivals, The Koreans reaction was just amazing when they are seeing a Palestinian girl singing one of the most known and loved Korean folk song.  It was also raising the question about Palestinian culture and lifestyle and everyone starts questioning. Do Palestinians also celebrate their folk music? It is definitely amazing to present it anytime the chance comes.  It was really a great opportunity living and experiencing that Palestinian Korean cultural exchange and mixture.
