The project "Revitalization of the Historic Centre of Beit Sahour" was selected for the second stage amongst 14 projects from 9 Arab countries that competed for the ICCROM-ATHAR AWARD to be discussed by an independent jury of Arab experts to select the winning project.
“Revitalization of the Historic Centre of Beit Sahour” took the first place of this award on the basis of the criteria of the award. It was considered by the jury as an achievement that reflects the importance of reviving the historical urban centre in the city of Beit Sahour through the quality of the rehabilitation of historical buildings and the adaptive re-use in the social, economic and cultural fields.
The nominated project included 7 distinguished traditional buildings and one urban project the CCHP has implemented in the historic centre of Beit Sahour, which encompasses significant impacts to revitalize the historic centre and bring life back to it in terms of culture, social, religious, economic and tourism by applying high-quality preservation techniques that respect the authenticity of the building, provide better mechanisms for protecting and managing cultural heritage and provide successful examples “pioneer projects” of the rehabilitating traditional buildings, showing their adaptations to different needs, which encouraged the private sector to invest in the area. Examples of new investments included the Citadel Restaurant, the Seed Library, cafes and others.
