Evaluation workshop for Cultural Heritage Preservation Projects in Palestine

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency "Sida" in cooperation with the Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation (CCHP), Riwaq Centre, Hebron Rehabilitation Committee and the Welfare Association organized yesterday an evaluation workshop under the title "A review of Sida's support to Historic Environment Preservation in the occupied Palestinian Territories", for those projects funded by Sida since 2001, to review the results of the evaluation for rehabilitation projects implemented by the four cultural heritage organizations (4CHO) over the past years and their impact on society.

 

The workshop was attended by representative from the French Consulate, Spanish Consulate, Danish Representative Office, Italian Cooperation, Spanish Cooperation, ANERA, YMCA Jerusalem, MOTA, JICA, USAID, European Union, International Orthodox Christian Charities, Local Government, Hebron Municipality and the four organizations working in the field of cultural heritage preservation.

 

Mr. Axel Wernhoff, the Swedish Consul General welcomed the audience expressing his happiness of being in this event which brings together all actors and stakeholders of the cultural heritage preservation.  Head of Development and Cooperation Sida Mr. Peter Lundberg, pointed out to the success of the partnership programme with the 4CHO and the efforts put to accomplish the message.

 

Dr. Shadia Touqan, director of the Welfare Association spoke on behalf of the 4CHO, pointing out to the great achievements made by those organizations for many historical and archeological sites in Palestine, where she stressed the need to work together to develop policies, rules and regulations that would help better preserve the cultural heritage and pass it to next generations.  Dr. Touqan thanked Sida for its continued generous support which contributed to the protection of more than 90 traditional buildings adapting it as a source of economic development, job creation and capacity building.

 

The workshop included presenting a joint film of the 4CHO which reviewed the projects and achievements of the 4 CHO and the impact on society.

 

Moreover, Mrs. Ana Gren, Consul Development Cooperation in Sida, convey their experience in Palestine over the past years which resulted in community development and planning praising the efforst of the 4 CHO.

Moreover, the two Sida's experts, Mr. Goran Tannerfeldt and Goran Rosenberg spoke about their experience with the 4CHO and results of their evaluation report for the rehabilitation projects implemented by those organizations.  The experts praise the main objectives of the Sida's programme in Palestine summarized by job creation, improve living conditions, social and economic development, and enhance the Palestinian identity, tourism development and capacity building inside and outside the organizations.

 

Since 2002, the total fund of Sida reached 23 million US dollar for the 4CHO, which resulted in the rehabilitation of 93 historic buildings and 32 urban projects in Palestine creating nearly 400,000 working days.


The recommendations of this evaluation report for both Sida and the 4CHO emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation, focus on community development and the continued cooperation between the cultural heritage organizations and Sida.

The workshop was opened to discussion at the end, for any suggestions or questions on the subject.  It is worth mentioning that this workshop took place in Dar Makhlouf in Beit Jala which the CCHP has rehabilitated in 2009
