The launch event took place at the University of Bethlehem under the auspices of H.E. Rula Ma'ayah, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, and Mrs Olga Baus-Giber, EU Head of Social Affairs. The book was introduced by professor Salah Al-Houdalieh, a professor of archaeology and cultural heritage at the Institute of Archaeology at Al-Quds University.
The book, published by Libri, explains the step-by-step process in the development of cultural heritage assets and how best to meet the challenges affecting its preservation and management, legal and political issues, funding, institutional issues, education and qualification, and documentation and inventory. It is focused on the Mediterranean region and collects, edits, exposes, and summarizes results of and recommendations from the Euromed Heritage IV programme (2008-2013), a regional programme funded by the European Union. This manual is the perfect companion for all those interested in the field of cultural heritage management and development, including the authorities, decision makers, practitioners, teachers and students.
Since 1998, the Euromed Heritage programme has contributed to safeguarding and revitalising cultural heritage in the Mediterranean region through development of knowledge, building of capacities, instilling fresh perspectives on education in cultural heritage at all levels – in schools and universities, amongst practitioners and within the general public – and the exchange of good practices for a better management of heritage resources. The programme also underlines the value of heritage as an economic resource and a tremendous opportunity for social development, particularly at the level of local communities - sustainable tourism, dwellings, handicrafts and cultural events. All these aspects were tackled by the projects within the programme, and address issues such as the rehabilitation of traditional architecture and historic cores, the revitalisation of audiovisual archives, manuscripts, museums and archaeological sites.
