Mrs. Rola Ma’aia minister of MOTA on behalf of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Vira Baboun Mayor of Bethlehem, Adviser to the President for Christian National and International Relations Eng. Ziad Al-Bandak, Mr. Fuad Salim General Manager of Bethlehem Governorate, Mr. Axel Vernhoff Sweden Consul General, Head of Culture Unit, UNESCO – Ramallah Office Mr. Ahmad Junaid Sorosh-Wali, Mr. Roberto Brutchi prisedent of Misericcordie, and number of organizations representative and local community attended the event.
Bishop Luciano Giovannetti, president of John Paul II in Italy welcomed the attendance and pointed to the importance of Bethlehem city especially in the period of Christmas, and thanked all the parties who contributed to the success of this project.
Mrs. Baboun praised the role of each of the Swedish government, the owners of the building and the CCHP for its efforts in reviving the heritage and preserving our cultural identity and contributes to job creation, especially in Bethlehem as a world heritage site.
Mr. Brutchi presented a brief description about John Paul II Foundation and their role in serving the man and the land in the Middle East, and praised the role of CCHP in preserving cultural heritage.
Arch. Issam Juha, director of CCHP pointed out that this project comes within the "Job Creation through Rehabilitation" programme which started in 2005, and helped up to now in rehabilitating more that 35 traditional building for adaptive reuse for the benefit of the community. Moreover, Arch. Juha thanked MOTA, Bethlehem Municipality, Governorate, and Swedish government, owners of the building, project contractor and CCHP staff.
Mr. Vernhoff expressed the proud of the Swedish government in helping and contributing in preserving the Palestinian cultural heritage due to its importance to the Palestinian people, and praised the role of CCHP, Bethlehem Municipality and HLT.
Mr. Ahmad Wali pointed to the importance of these projects in contributing to preserving cultural heritage of peoples and competes with each other to reach the international standards to reflect the civilization and culture of peoples such as the Palestinian people.
Designer and supervisor of the project, Arch. Luma Qumsieh-Khoury presented a power point show about the project's phases and challenges faced rehabilitation works in revitalizing this unique building, in addition to job creation.
In turn, Mrs. Ma’aia on behalf of the prime minister, expressed her delight to inaugurate this building, and thanked the Swedish government for its continued support for infrastructure projects and traditional buildings to be used for productive, social, and cultural and health purposes. Also praised the efforts of CCHP since 2001 in this area, and providing opportunities for temporary and permanent jobs and adapting buildings for community service.
After the ceremony, the delegation toured in the building, where CCHP presented a presentation of photos showing the building before and after rehabilitation.
