Handing over the Rehabilitation of St. George Hosh Complex to the Arab Orthodox Benevolent Society

st.george inau Under the patronage of H.E. Mrs. Rola' Ma'aia, Minister of MOTA, the Beit Jala Municipality in cooperation with the Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation (CCHP) handed over St. George Hosh Complex to the Arab Orthodox Benevolent Society, on the 22nd of May, 2014. The project, funded by the Italian Government through the Palestinian Municipalities Support Programme, will be used as museum for Beit Jala after rehabilitation.

 

Dr. Nael Salman praised the role of each of the Italian government, the owners of the building and CCHP for its efforts in reviving the heritage and preserving our cultural identity and contribution to job creation, especially in Beit Jala. He also emphasized on the role of the locals to work together on protecting and preserving the cultural heritage as a form of the Palestinian existence, and especially in the city of Beit Jala. Dr. Salman also paid gratitude to all those who have contributed in the success of the all the projects especially the Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation, the Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities, The Italian Government, the complex owners and the partners.

Issam Juha; director of the CCHP, pointed out to that this project reinforces the modern concept to consider the cultural heritage resources as mean for economical and social development. It is expected that after the implementation of the complex, it would be considered as a mean of attraction to tourists in Beit Jala. Arch. Issam thanked each of the complex owners, the Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities, Beit Jala Municipality, CCHP staff and the project's contractor.  

 

Antonio De La Rocca; the program director of PMSP, expressed his gratification to be part of the event. He also pointed out to the significant role of the CCHP and their efforts in preserving the cultural heritage. Dr. La Rocca also praised Beit Jala Municipality for their active contribution in the project as such projects preserve the nation's cultural heritage. Such projects would encourage the nations to thrive to present the Palestinian heritage internationally.

 

The Arab Orthodox Benevolent Society manager, Mr. Joseph Al Massou paid gratitude to all those helped in the success of the event in general and the owners of the complex in particular. He also identified the Society's role in serving the society. 

 

st.george inau3 Mrs. Ma'aia thanked the Italian Government on its continuous support for the infrastructure projects and the traditional buildings to be used socially, culturally productively. She assured that preserving the cultural heritage is part of resisting and it is a national duty to reinforce the Palestinian identity. Mrs. Ma'aia also paid tribute to CCHP since 2001 for its role in creating job opportunities both permanent and temporary and for employing the buildings for the societal use especially this historical complex.

 

CCHP architect Muhammad Kattoush presented a PowerPoint presentation detailing the stages of work in the complex and the difficulties they faced in the rehabilitation works. He stated all those challenges that made them arrive at this stage in the project in rehabilitating this unique architectural work of art, and in creating opportunities for labors. 

 

Afterwards, Mrs. Christine Hazboun Al-Saca made a presentation about Mar Jeries Operational plan. Moreover, Dr. Salaman handed over the complex’s keys to the Arab Orthodox Benevolent Society. The event concluded with a tour in the complex and its different sections.
